Friday the 16th of October was when I really started to think about what I wanted to do for this portfolio. I wanted to try something not many people would do and I think I hit a goldmine with this idea. How it'll work in execution is to be seen, if I continue through with it but if I do, here it is. The notes for the idea I call "Shutter".
"Mystery, Vague, Limited Story Given. Three main scenes take
place being split up through editing, potentially shown out of order. The
transition between each is a blank screen with a shutter sound, hinting at a
potential photography theme. One of the scenes is someone looking into a video
camera, attempting to determine whether it works, they are interested in it.
One of them scenes is of a happy time. People laughing, fun for all. One of
these scenes follows a mysterious individual, watching certain parts of the
areas from a distance, never showing his face. Regardless, the final shot grabs
the attention by being something different. Potentially blood, a corpse, a
gun/knife, anything to hint at a murder. Maybe a girls desk with a compass on
it. What’s key for this idea is that nothing too much gets revealed and that
the clips all go on for a set amount of time. The audience should be left
curious but intrigued. They shouldn’t connect, they should be asking “What?”.
Limited if any dialogue should be used, soundtrack should be ambient or
naturalistic background noise."
A lot of this idea is very ambitious and experimental, which is why I'm unsure whether it'll work but I believe this can be pulled off. One main draw of this idea is that establishing a narrative can be very limited, meaning I have a lot of room to try creative elements I wouldn't have even considered before. For example, the use of the person staring into the camera. I want to see how long it would take for something like that to become stale and try and keep it interesting. This idea is going to rely heavily on the actors performance to work, so I'll need to choose people that know what they're doing.
